Around the World! is our weekly posting on our geography lessons. We use the Little Passports curriculum as a guide, and each month we study a different country based on the Little Passports package for that month. We always try to incorporate the Montessori ideas when designing our monthly unit, and we always try to keep it engaging and fun. Part of each month includes reading books, coloring pictures of flags & maps, doing crafts, looking at pictures of landmarks, people, and art, cooking food from the country we are learning about, and listening to music from that country.

Welcome to my blog!
I'm Ally, stay at home doctoral student mom to my three kids on earth -8 years old (Jedi), 5 years old (Monkey), and 3 year old (Bitty Bug). We also have one angel in heaven (9/7/05-9/7/05). Monkey was adopted from Vietnam in 2007. Our oldest child attended a Montessori school for 3 years, but now all three children are homeschooled. We use a Montessori-inspired curriculum for preschool, and then a hands-on multisensory curriculum for kindergarten and above.
Occassionally, you'll get to read about life as a mom of special needs children. Jedi is on the Autism Spectrum (formerly diagnosed as moderate-severe autism, but after a lot of early intervention, he's now on the high functioning/Asperger's end of the spectrum). Monkey has also recently been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. And Bitty Bug, who is as neuro-typical as can be, was born at 36 weeks gestation and has Selective IgA Deficiency and FPIES. So, if you read posts about therapies, it's likely referring to one of the three kids...probably the older two, as the only thing we have to do with Miss Bug is keep her healthy (easier said than done, right?). Oh, and I'm PhD-ABD in counseling with a focus on autism interventions and worked as an autism behavior specialist prior to staying home with the kids. :)
Our family loves the outdoors, Tang Soo Do (a form of martial arts), and traveling! Our goal is to share as much about the world as we can with the kids, and so we are constantly traveling to a new city, a new state, or even a new country...and when we are not traveling, we are studying other countries and cultures.
