This week’s nature challenge was to spend time exploring your own backyard. Now, most people might think “eh, what nature is there in suburbia? Well, besides mice.” But, the kids and I spent about an hour just looking at the various bits of nature in our very own suburbian backyard.
Welcome to my blog!
I'm Ally, stay at home doctoral student mom to my three kids on earth -8 years old (Jedi), 5 years old (Monkey), and 3 year old (Bitty Bug). We also have one angel in heaven (9/7/05-9/7/05). Monkey was adopted from Vietnam in 2007. Our oldest child attended a Montessori school for 3 years, but now all three children are homeschooled. We use a Montessori-inspired curriculum for preschool, and then a hands-on multisensory curriculum for kindergarten and above.
Occassionally, you'll get to read about life as a mom of special needs children. Jedi is on the Autism Spectrum (formerly diagnosed as moderate-severe autism, but after a lot of early intervention, he's now on the high functioning/Asperger's end of the spectrum). Monkey has also recently been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. And Bitty Bug, who is as neuro-typical as can be, was born at 36 weeks gestation and has Selective IgA Deficiency and FPIES. So, if you read posts about therapies, it's likely referring to one of the three kids...probably the older two, as the only thing we have to do with Miss Bug is keep her healthy (easier said than done, right?). Oh, and I'm PhD-ABD in counseling with a focus on autism interventions and worked as an autism behavior specialist prior to staying home with the kids. :)
Our family loves the outdoors, Tang Soo Do (a form of martial arts), and traveling! Our goal is to share as much about the world as we can with the kids, and so we are constantly traveling to a new city, a new state, or even a new country...and when we are not traveling, we are studying other countries and cultures.

Thanks for sharing! You found a lot in your backyard.
I love all your pictures. What wonderful signs of fall! My oldest two were diagnosed with Autism. They are now at both ends as my daughter “no longer meets the criteria for autism” and my son is almost mute. (I also have four more after those two that do not have autism.) It has been good to meet you and your family.
Nice photos. Love the toad. I’m not sure how my girls are going to survive this winter not hunting toads and butterflies!

Very Cute Toad! Love all of the fall foliage! Thanks for sharing your fall colors!
Very cool picture of the toad!! I too live in Ohio. Enjoyed reading about what you discovered.
Look at all that great stuff to eventually learn about right in your own backyard! You really need to read the Handbook of Nature Study section on goldenrod while it is blooming in your yard. There is a delightful story that Anna Botsford Comstock tells about the “golden cities”….your children would love to hear it.
Great job on this challenge and I appreciate you sharing your link.
